Basic rice cooking that is what the Oster 4731 Rice Cooker does. It is a user friendly appliance and is a pretty good size that takes up little space on the kitchen countertop. Unfortunately, those are the only good things about this product and even then, having a defective item taking up space, even if it just a small space in your kitchen is an annoying thought.
We got the Oster 4731 Rice Cooker as a wedding present and we’re so sorry not to have put it on the registry as something NOT to been given to us. We did read a few reviews about this item and they were not so good. We crossed our fingers that ours would be better than what other people had but sadly, it wasn’t.
Like the other people who made the reviews, we got a defective item too. I think the heating mechanism on our rice cooker got too hot. It always burnt the rice and later melted a part of the lever so it didn’t stay down when we pushed it. We had to insert a folded piece of paper in between the grove once the lever was pushed down to keep it on the cook setting.
It does signal the rice cooking is done with a beeping sound. But it beeps continuously and incessantly, we had to unplug it to stop the noise. There is no sense for the keep warm function then because this rice cooker won’t work unplugged.
I do know that the heating mechanism was the problem because after some uses, we did get a funky plastic smell on the rice that was cooked. Burnt and funny smelling, that is something that you would definitely not like to eat, it is such a waste. To top of this mountain of defects on this item, it does say that the rice pot is nonstick and dishwasher safe.
The nonstick coating doesn’t peal, yes, but after a few washings we got a discolored rice pot. I did get to thinking it was the dishwashing soap that we used but no other item we had became as discolored as this so most likely it is the rice pot itself.
On the bright side, we got the Oster 4731 as a gift. We didn’t use our own money to buy it. Nothing was wasted but the rice we tried to cook in it that came out burnt and odorous.
